Panel 2: A girl lies snoring in bed, a stuffed rabbit beside her. This girl is named Cynthia. Panel 3: Cynthia sits up in bed, now somehow in the forest with the crow. Panel 4: The crow hands her the envelope, she asks: 'For me?' Panel 5: Cynthia is trembling, a piece of notepad paper in her hands. Panel 6: Black spots run up her arms, the note reads: Remember your blood runs black. Panel 7: The stuffed rabbit snatches the paper from her hands and floats away. She screams after it: 'No, wait!' Panel 1: A match is struck, a girl with buzzed hair named Matilda holds it up while a smaller girl named Zoe clings to her other arm. 'Everyone, uhh... watch your heads, ' Matilda says. Panel 2: A boy with glasses and backpack named Caleb shines a flashlight on the walls of an old mineshaft. Panel 3: He bumps into Zoe, who pushes his face away and makes him drop the flashlight. 'Stop breathing all the air!' she says. Panel 4: 'You poked my eye!' Caleb yelps, feeling his face. Zoe puts her hands on her sides in defiance and says, 'And I'll do it again!' Panel 5: Another girl named Cori, her mess of hair tied up in a big green bow, looks over at the others squabbling, but decides to ignore them. She holds up the lantern she's holding to get a closer look at something. Panel 6: She smears away a layer of dust off the wall before her. Panel 1: All four of the kids stop to stare up at what was uncovered. 'Golly,' says one of them. Panel 2: A split panel. On the left, Matilda and Zoe stare up at a large, decrepit green-ish door with brick panelling. On the right, Cynthia, who was chasing the rabbit on the first page, looks up at a large black iron gate, the paper fluttering away from her. Above both entryways is a figure of a multi-eyed, winged creature. Panel 3: A shimmering silver key with wings descends in front of her. Panel 4: The key floats towards the iron gate, over a path of clouds, towards a big lock in the center. Panels 1-2: Back in the mine, a pack of dynamite sits placed before the big door. 'Okay everyone,' says Matilda, standing beside Caleb who is ready to ignite the fuse, 'Stand back!' Panels 3-4: 'Stop, wait!' cries Cori, and the other two freeze. 'Where did you even--?' she asks. Panel 5: 'Okay...' Cori sighs, pinching the bridge of her nose, 'You can't just BLOW UP a door to the underworld.' Panel 6: Matilda leans over to Cori, 'Why is everything the underworld with you?' Panel 7: Zoe dissociates while the others bicker back and forth. Panel 8: Suddenly, pebbles fall from above onto her head. Panel 9: 'Ow!' she yelps, looking upwards. Panel 1: 'Caleb?' Cori asks, her and Matilda stand armed crossed, 'Did you press that thing?' Panel 2: 'No!' Caleb cries, backing down as pebbles continue to fall around them. Panel 3: The mineshaft begins to rumble more intensely. Panel 4: A wooden support beam snaps, and Matilda jumps to push Zoe out of the way. Panel 5: Zoe lies on the floor of the mineshaft, shielding her head from falling rocks. Matilda shouts, 'We need to get out of here now!' Panel 1: Cynthia floats over a golden road through a city of clouds. Spired towers decorate the background. Panel 2: A bright sun-being partly covered by clouds holds out its hand to her. Panel 3: Meanwhile, the mineshaft is now caving in. Panel 4: Matilda runs, holding a walkie-talkie in her hands and shouting, 'It'd be real nice if you picked up right now!' Panel 5: 'Look!' somebody shouts, catching her attention. Panel 6: Caleb points to a beam of light pouring through the ceiling of the cave. 'There!' Panel 1: Cynthia hesitantly considers taking the hand of the sun-being. Panel 2: Something begins to rumble and startles her. Panel 3: She runs back down the golden road, as something calls her name: 'CYNTHIA!' Panel 4: A hand pops out of a flowerbed, startling the woman kneeling beside it and confusing the man smoking a pipe next to her. Panel 5: Zoe, Matilda, Cori and Caleb crawl out of the dirt in a pile. Someone, presumably the man, mutters: 'Damn kids.' Panel 6: Somewhere, Cynthia snaps awake from a nap against a countertop, walkie-talkie in hand, with a gasp: 'Huh?!' Panel 1: Back by the flowerbed, the man with a pipe interrogates Matilda. 'What were you doing under my house?' he asks. 'Well we started under OUR house...' replies Matilda. Panel 2: A dark haired girl in a plaid skirt runs out of the house behind them. Cynthia, now on the scene, runs up to Cori. 'I'm sorry, I--' she starts. 'Fell asleep?' Cori responds, dusting the dirt off her clothes. Panel 3: Cori looks at Cynthia, 'I thought maybe our walkie-talkies died. How did you know we were at Stella's?' Cynthia, who doesn't know how to answer her, says, 'Uh?' Panel 4: 'Well, since you're all here,' says the woman who was gardening with a big smile, 'How about you clean up and come inside for some lemonade?' Stella, her daughter, the dark haired girl, is next to her. In the window a maid pours a pitcherfull of lemonade.
